Naval
Sea System Command (or NAVSEA) has released
its latest Standard Specification for Ship
and Alteration. The FY-08 publication includes
Standard Item 009-32 for “Cleaning
and Painting Requirements; Accomplish.” Section
3.1.3.2 of the report lists the Sponge-Jet
technology as an effective alternative to
other conventional abrasive technologies.
Military shipyards have the option of using
dry, low dust, reusable Sponge Media™ abrasives
in place of other dust and rebound excessive
solutions.
As published in the report,
the “Sponge-Jet media and process may
be used as an alternative to obtain SSPC-SP-10
or SSPC-SP-11 cleanliness.” “This
is important news for government shipyards,’ stated
Michael Merritt, President of Sponge-Jet,
Inc, ‘now engineers have an effective
solution for preparing erection weld seams,
ballast tanks or other areas where
abrasive blasting is prohibited or problematic;
this will extend coating life and thus ship
readiness, while lowering future maintenance
costs.”
Copies of the new standard
are available at the National Surface Treatment
Center (or NST Center) at http://www.supship.navy.mil/ssrac4/nsi/08nsi/009-32_FY08.pdf
